Meet the Potters
Charles Hughes has been a professional potter for over 15 years. A long time resident of the State College, PA area, he opened Hughes Pottery as a one man operation shortly after studying at Penn State University in the early 1990's. He is a founding member and current volunteer and teacher at the Creative Oasis, a local non-profit community art center. Charles is responsible for the majority of all the work produced, creating and refining many of the forms we make. He also prides himself in developing the lovely glaze combinations we use.
Rowan Rose joined Hughes Pottery (and Charles' household) in 2007 after a long and strange romance. A successful stained glass artist in Erie, PA, Rowan began learning the potter's trade from Charles. Much to her delight (and Charlie's frustration!) she got pretty good pretty fast and has been selling her work steadily ever since. Rowan's work is primarily smaller forms (wee bowls are a favorite) and creating the carvings that become stamps for many of our pendants and mugs. She is also the self-declared "Goddess of Marketing" for Hughes Pottery, spending much of her time taking pictures, creating promotional materials and updating this website.
Morgan Hughes began learning the trade literally at his father's knee at PSU. He studied the craft through observation- waiting and listening through hundreds of his dad's classes as a small child. Morgan began making pots quite young and started selling professionally in 2002 at the age of 10. Today Morgan is 16, and although cars and girls take precedence in his life, he continues to refine his skills as a potter. Morgan's work, primarily in porcelain and white clay, is in high demand wherever we sell our pottery.
